Memorial

This memorial sculpture, erected in 1926, is of a uniformed World War I soldier marching up a hill with his proper left foot forward. In his hands he holds his rifle on his proper right side. The sculpture is mounted on a tall rectangular base. Originally placed to honor World War I, it now also honors WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. 

The inscription reads:

In 1918, Delaware College president Samuel Chiles Mitchell proposed making the planned library a memorial to the Delawareans who died in World War I, stating "Used by both colleges, it would be the dynamo of the whole institution." Due to the unsatisfactory nature of the existing library facilities the new building became a high priority for both Mitchell and his successor, Walter Hullihen, who oversaw the merger of the men's and women's colleges to form the University of Delaware in 1921. Funding difficulties forced Hullihen to scale back the grand design of Day and Klauder to a more modest building capable of housing 100,000 volumes. In 1922, the university embarked on a fundraising campaign to raise the $300,000 needed for the building, which ended successfully with more than 26,000 members of the public pledging funds.

Despite the successful campaign, funding problems continued as some of the pledged money failed to materialize and inflation drove up the cost of the building. The library committee balked at beginning construction without funds set aside for an endowment, despite warnings from committee member W. O. Sypherd that "Failure to build this Library now will be a moral failure, the results of which would be disastrous to the future welfare of the University." The situation was eventually resolved by securing additional pledges from the existing donors and by modifying the library design to reduce the construction cost.

At the groundbreaking ceremony on December 11, 1923, around 300 male students, alumni, and faculty dug out the building's basement with the women's college students on hand to serve refreshments. The library cornerstone was laid on June 9, 1924, on the occasion of the university's first joint commencement for both men and women. The building was complete by the end of the year, and most of the university's library collections were moved in over Christmas break. The library opened for business at the beginning of the spring semester in January 1925 and was later formally dedicated at an elaborate ceremony on Memorial Day, May 23.

This central building holds the "Book of the Dead", a list of the war dead from Delaware during World War I. The book is turned to a new page every day, usually by an ROTC cadet.

Begun in 1910 as a University of Georgia center for student activities, construction stopped in 1912 from lack of funding.  The building stood idle until a 1922 fundraising drive known as the War Memorial Fund enabled its completion as a memorial to the 47 UGA students and alumni who died in service during World War I.  Their names are engraved on two bronze plaques under the impressive rotunda, which is encircled by the words “In loyal love, we set apart this house – a memorial to those lovers of peace who took arms, left home and dear ones, and gave life that all men might be free.”  Around the upper exterior of the building are engraved names of major WWI battles in which Georgians participated.

Also, a bronze plaque inside the courthouse lists the same sixteen names as the outside granite monument.    Inscription – “Erected by the John Houston Chapter – In Honor of the Men of Upson County Who Died in Service in the Great War for the Cause of World Liberty – 1920.”

 

The memorial garden is near the Veterans Cemetery offices.

Division activated November 1917, arrived France March 1918. Earned the proud sobriquet 'Rock of the Marine' by stopping the German advance on Paris at Chateau Thierry, June 1918.

The Battleship TEXAS is the last dreadnought in existence in the world, a veteran of Vera Cruz (1914) and both World Wars, and is credited with the introduction and innovation of advances in gunnery, aviation and radar. Having been designed in the first decade of the 20th century, (keel laid in 1911 and completed in 1914), and having seen action in some of the most intense and critical campaigns of WWII, she is an important piece of our naval and maritime history.

After the United States entered World War I, she spent the year 1917 training gun crews for merchant ships that were often attacked by gunfire from surfaced submarines. Texas joined the 6th Battle Squadron of the British Grand Fleet early in 1918. Operating out of Scapa Flow and the Firth of Forth, Texas protected forces laying a North Sea mine barrage, responded to German High Seas Fleet sorties, fired at submarine periscopes observed by multiple ships, and helped prevent enemy naval forces from interrupting the supply of Allied forces in Europe. Late in 1918, she escorted the German Fleet en route to its surrender anchorage and escorted President Wilson to peace talks in France.

WWI Memorial Plaque and Flagpole dedicated to the Vacaville, CA citizens who gave their lives in WWI. Memorial is located in front of the Veterans Memorial Building, 510 Merchant Street, Vacaville, CA. There is a 1918 6 inch, Trench Mortar to the left of the memorial.

The plaque on the base of this doughboy statue dedicates it to the citizens of Camp Washington "who offered their lives in defense of humanity in the World War." In the late 80s, inscriptions were added around the base to honor each branch of the Armed Forces and service in World War II, the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam.
