Karl W. Detzer served in Two World Wars and on the Mexican Border in 1916. He solved the Mrs. Cyrus McCromick diamond case in Chicago for the Pinkerton Company. During World War 1, he headed the Le Mans District of the U.S. Army Division of Criminal Division of Investigation solving 100 murders in 100 days. He wrote a number of books and was the editor at large for Reader's Digest, making him one of the most widely read authors in history. During World War Two, he had a critic role in the U.S. Army, solving problems around the world. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for his efforts, the Highest Award for non combat award actions.
