The Making of Americans: A WWI Home Front Story

2017 is the centennial celebration of World War I. During the early 20th century Michigan's work force contained a significant number of European immigrants, which became an issue when the U.S. went to war on their former countries. WWI also presented the United States with a unique opportunity, the establishment of Nationalism, which united immigrant residents and rallied them around their new country. George Creel and the Committee on Public Information who took on the job of combating dissent and creating a patriotic "Home Front", will also be discussed. Our speaker, Dennis Skupinski, is a historian whose specialty is World War I. He has appeared on local television and radio shows, has published articles, and curated the display "Combat Uniforms on the Western Front" at Michigan's Military Heritage Museum.
