About The Event

Wharton, NJ, February 15, 2017 – A World War I Commemoration Event will be held in the Post Hall at the William J. Hocking American Legion Post 91, 99 North Main Street, Wharton, NJ, on Saturday, April 1, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The event will feature artifacts from museums and private collectors, audio and visual presentations from historians and by re-enactors from across New Jersey will occur throughout the afternoon. Exhibits will be interactive and will include visual displays and artifacts from the World War I era. Historians will be on hand to share the history of Wharton and nearby towns, Picatinny Arsenal, Morris County, and New Jersey during this period.  Representatives from New Jersey military units, units that have a rich history of service before, during, and after World War I, will participate in the event. The event is free to both participants and the public.

Main Street is off Route 46 and close to Interstate 80 and State Route 15.

About The American Legion and Post 91

The William J. Hocking American Legion Post 91 was chartered on April 18, 1928. The post is named after Private William J. Hocking, a Wharton native, who was killed in action on November 1, 1918, in the Ardennes Forest, France. Post 91 has a long history of service to the community, youth, and veterans. Congress chartered the American Legion in 1919 as a patriotic veteran’s organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. The American Legion is the nation’s largest wartime veteran’s service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of programs in our communities advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion and support to our fellow service members and veterans.
