The Morris County Historical Society is proud to announce Mr. Martin Kane, local historian, author, and president of the Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum, will give a special presentation on Hudson Maxim, Tuesday, March 28 at 6 p.m. at MCHS’s Acorn Hall in Morristown. Mr. Kane will share little known information on Hudson Maxim, a highly respected, local innovator who held a patent for smokeless gunpowder, invented a variety of high explosives, and designed a torpedo-proof ship. Maxim, well ahead of his time, advocated for a national armaments movement prior to the United States’ entry into WWI, and was an early and ardent supporter of women’s rights.

MCHS’s exhibit “1917: World War, Women’s Rights, and Weaponry Sciences” features the work of Hudson Maxim, and illustrates how local men and women contributed to tremendous advances in weaponry sciences during the WWI era. The exhibit also focuses on sacrifices of Morris County residents who served, and gave their lives, during the War, and highlights the era’s associated cultural changes as women sought equal recognition and the right to vote.

Space is limited, and tickets must be purchased in advance. The cost for the presentation is $15 for adults; $10 for seniors; $7 for students, and Free for MCHS members. This presentation is offered as part of the MCHS’s Jeanne H. and William C. Watson Memorial Speakers Series, in honor of the MCHS’s first Executive Director, Jeanne Watson, 1980 – 1996.
