On May 9th, Burlington City Adult Education’s guest lecturer series will include an evening program by Erik Burro entitled LEGACY OF REMEMBRANCE. It will be an expanded version of other talks which are already scheduled for libraries in Princeton, Morristown and Bridgeton. In Burlington, he will include information that should be helpful for those interested in WWI genealogical research. He has written on related aspects of World War I, provided images for Rutgers WWI exhibition and is scheduled to make appearances at several county historical societies, elsewhere in the state. While planning a book on New Jersey’s monuments for next year, he has broadened his survey research to include New York City and eastern Pennsylvania. He recently aired a NJ monument program for the Veterans Hour, Radio WRSU, New Brunswick and made two presentations for the Armed Forces Heritage Museum. In the spring of last year, in anticipation of the Centennial, Erik Burro had begun a survey of monuments throughout New Jersey. He was surprised to discover nearly 50 figurative monuments, many by famous sculptors, among the nearly 200 WWI memorials around the state. Some had been cared for over the years, while others were neglected, vandalized or forgotten. He has participated with the State of New Jersey in updating records and documented information that is now available on national WWI Centennial website. He expects to leave on a short fact-finding trip to France to solve several mysteries he has uncovered related to the Great War monuments.
