About The Event

“Salvation Army Doughnut Girls of WWI” presented by actress and storyteller Laurie Gaulke.  Listen to an American Salvation Army Volunteer, a “Lassie” as they were affectionately known by the soldiers, describe her experiences on the battlefield of France in 1918. During WWI, approximately 500 Salvation Army volunteers, many of them young women, served with the American Army in France. 

In this engaging performance the audience will discover that whether frying up doughnuts, writing letters for ‘the boys’ to the folks at home, mending uniforms or ministering to souls on the ravaged battlefields of France, these young women answered the call to “place God in deeds” and became the darlings of the doughboys.  Using their own words as recorded in diaries, letters and interviews, Gaulke breathes life into history and the everyday people who create it. 6:30pm.
