 r of the 100th Anniversary of World War I, The North Jersey History and Gen
 ealogy Center presents an exhibit from our library’s collections.\nOn April
  6, 1917, the United States formally entered World War I by declaring war o
 n Germany.\nGerman U-Boat attacks against unarmed vessels carrying American
  citizens and evidence of a plot to ally with Mexico against the United Sta
 tes rendered American neutrality unsustainable.\nBy the summer of 1917, com
 munities around the country had mobilized human and financial resources in 
 support of the Allied war effort.\nThe photos and stories told in newspaper
  headlines, obituaries, ephemera and letters to provide a glimpse into the 
 extraordinary efforts of one such community. A pilot’s diary and his family
 ’s letters, correspondence of fire fighters to their friends back at the fi
 re station, a letter of a mother who lost her son, and first hand battle de
 scriptions by African American soldiers reveal the personal and human side 
 of a community that was forever affected by the war.\n
