Memorial

The first airport in central Ohio, Norton Field was named for World War I pilot and star Ohio State University athlete Fred William Norton, a Columbus native. On July 2, 1918, Capt. Norton led the 27th "Eagle" Pursuit Squadron in one of the earliest significant American air engagements of World War I. He died from wounds after his Nieuport 28 was shot down in northern France less than three weeks later.

This is a German artillery piece captured in WWI and mounted on a granite and limestone base. It was presented by Norwood Post No. 70 of the American legion.

The Nutley Memorial Parkway was laid out and dedicated to honor the men and women of Nutley who served in World War I. On Armistice Day 1935, a memorial tablet to Dr. George B. Philhower was erected on the Parkway to honor the doctor who was its main advocate.

A simple flag pole memorial in Oak Hill Memorial Park honoring San Jose WWI veterans.

Erected by the citizens of Oak Park and River Forest, Illinois in honor of the men of this community who took part in the World War, 1914-1918." It depicts a US pilot, a soldier & a sailor in front of a figure of Columbia sheathing her sword. Inscribed with the names of 2,446 veterans from Oak Park, 56 of whom were killed in WWI.

Actually, the "public subscription" efforts tallied $52,206.69, but the effort, spearheaded by a committee, started fundraising efforts as early as 1921, so the investment earnings on the fund topped out at $59,267.46, leaving the Park District of Oak Park with a trust fund of $6,693. 83 to be used for maintenance and cleaning.

 Renovation began in July 2009. Initially, it was expected to cost more than $240,000, but another $79,400 was added when inspectors in October 2009 found the foundation also was decaying. The final renovation cost was $326,400.

This memorial, in Veterans Memorial Park, was dedicated in 1926 and has a small plaque in front that reads:

The Odebolt Memorial and park area were donated to the City of Odebolt by bankers. Construction work began in 1916; the Memorial was dedicated on Armistice Day 1921.

The Oglala Lakota Veterans Monument is located at the Piya Wiconi Administrative Headquarters in Kyle, South Dakota.

The wall bears than 1,800 names of Oglala Lakota veterans from World War I, WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War inscribed upon bronze plaques. In addition to the plaques, there are two life-size bronze statues, one of a male Lakota veteran and the other of a female Lakota Veteran.

The Ohio World War Memorial was erected in 1930, the work of Arthur Ivone and marks Ohio's participation in the First World War. Referring to rank and file soldiers as "doughboys" is closely associated with World War I but the term goes back further and has several possible explanations. The most common of these explanations is that the large buttons on the men's uniforms looked like the doughy dumplings eaten in soup. A sweeter story is that the name is connected to the enthusiasm that soldiers had for fried dough-doughnuts!

 Dedicated in 1937, the Oise-Aisne American Cemetery and Memorial contains the remains of 6,012 American war dead, most of whom lost their lives while fighting in this vicinity in 1918 during World War I. Their headstones, aligned in long rows on the 36.5-acre site, rise in a gentle slope from the entrance to the memorial at the far end. The burial area is divided into four plots by wide paths lined by trees and beds of roses; at the intersection are a circular plaza and the flagpole.

The memorial is a curving colonnade, flanked at the ends by a chapel and a map room. It is built of rose-colored sandstone with white trim bearing sculptured details of wartime equipment. The chapel contains an altar of carved stone. Engraved upon its Walls of the Missing are 241 names. Rosettes mark the names of those since recovered and identified. The map room contains an engraved and colored wall map portraying the military operations in this region during 1918.

This stone obelisk lists the names of the servicemembers from Okanogan County who lost their lives in World War I. It is located outside the Okanogan County Administration Building.

This bronze sculpture on a grey granite base is located in the southwest part of the Olathe Memorial Cemetery. He wears a military uniform with helmet and boots. His proper right hand is on his waist. In his proper left hand he holds the barrel of his gun, the butt of the gun rests on the base. He has a knapsack slung across his shoulder which rests on his proper left hip. The statue was dedicated on Memorial Day 1926 and was donated by American Legion Post 153 and by the parents of Earl Collier, the first Johnson County soldier killed in World War I. The American Legion Post in Olathe is named after Earl Collier.

This bronze plaque is mounted on a granite stone at the site of the Old York Gaol, a National Historic Landmark. It simply lists the names of WWI veterans from York.

The Oneida Veterans Wall was made to honor all those who Veterans who served in the Armed Forces. The Oneida people were this countries first allies fighting with George Washington in the Revolutionary War. The wall is a monument to all those who fought and gave their lives for this country. The Oneida Veterans Wall was originally constructed in 2007.  In October 2012, the Wall received a face lift.  The wall has been sealed and the outside wall has received a new look with lettering.
