history as the site of the critically important lumber mill and wood “cut up” plant
for the War Department’s newly formed Army Spruce Squadrons and Spruce Divisions.
of the Army Signal Corps to its transformation into an important U. S. Army Air Corps field,
Pearson Air Museum helps provide a detailed look into the golden age of aviation at Pearson
Field. The scale model of the Spruce Mill is a fascinating look at the enormity of the NW’s
contribution to the national war effort.

On a short granite obelisk are four bronze inscription plates listing names of the local war dead from the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War, Spanish-American War, WWI, WWII, and the Korean War. It was dedicated in 1930 and rededicated in 1950.

This statue in Golden Gate Park commemorates General of the Armies John Joseph (John) Pershing (1860-1948), the American general and commander from World War I.  The statue was sculpted by Haig Patigian, Armenian-American sculptor, and was dedicated on November 11, 1922.  The inscription reads: "In tribute to General Pershing and the victorious armies of the United States and her co-belligerents during the World War 1914-1918.  Presented by Dr. Morris Herzstein, 1922".  Behind Gen. Pershing's foot is a destroyed German helmet.

The Pete Maytubby Code Talker Bridge (Pennington Creek Bridge) is located on SH-7.

The Pete Wheeler Georgia War Veterans Memorial Plaza is located near the State Capitol in downtown Atlanta. It includes a World War I Memorial honoring Georgians who served, including 1,937 killed in action and 3,319 wounded in action. An estimated 77,000 Georgians served in the military during World War 1. Named for Brigadier General Pete Wheeler, a World War II veteran who was a long-time commissioner of Georgia’s Department of Veteran Affairs, the plaza contains memorial plaques to Georgians who lost their lives in service in each of America’s wars, from the Revolution through Iraq and Afghanistan.

This bronze "Spirit of the American Doughboy" stands on a 5’ stone pedestal. It was erected on 11 November 1928 and appears to still be in excellent condition.

A plaque on the front of the pedestal reads:

The copyright plate is at the base of the sculptor to the doughboy's right and reads:

This memorial stands in front of Memorial Hall and was built in 1922. It commemorates the students of the school who served in World War I.

The memorial is a four-sided column painted white with an electric light on top. Four cement legs reach out from the memorial. The south side of the memorial has a bronze plaque in memory of the students of the school who served in the military in World War I. The north side of the memorial bears a bronze plaque mentioning the building of Memorial Hall and “this fountain.” This indicates that the memorial at one time was a fountain, but it no longer functions as such.

The inscription on the south side of the memorial reads:

“In memory of the students of this school who enlisted in the Army and Navy during the World War.”

“The purpose of this school is to introduce Indian youth the opportunities and responsibilities of civilization and to acquaint his Caucasian brother with the sterling qualities of the Native American.”

PIcatinny Arsenal was founded in 1880 as the Picatinny Powder Depot. It is located in a valley between two sets of hills to shield the surrounding countryside from any accidental explosions. Gunpowder was manufactured until after World War I, at which time the facility also began producing heavy munitions and grew more involved in research & development activities. Testing and control laboratories were established during the WWI years, as well as the beginning of a small experimental plant for the design and development of artillery ammunition. 

With the declaration of war in April 1917, Picatinny Arsenal's workforce jumped from 450 to 1,300; then jumped again to 2,167 in 1918.  By July 1919, it was back down to 509. 

The arsenal continued to function as a research & development facility in the years between the two world wars. Major accomplishments of this period included better methods for storing smokeless powder, improved processing of cyclonite (more commonly called RDX), and the discovery of a new explosive, then known as haleite but later known as Ednatol.

Picatinny maintained as much as 49 miles of its own narrow and standard gauge Picatinny Arsenal Railroad to service its many transportation needs (fuel, raw materials, ammunition, etc.). 

Today, Picatinny Arsenal is the Joint Center of Excellence for Guns & Ammunition, providing products to all branches of the US military. More than 6,000 personnel lead in the research, development, acquisition and life-cycle management of advanced conventional weapon systems and ammunition.

This monument, dedicated on July 4, 1927, includes life-size marble figures of soldiers atop a granite base, and granite benches and pedestals.  On the pedestal beneath the doughboy and female figures is a dedication to honor veterans of the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and World War I, as well as women on the home front.

ocated on the campus of the Pike County Courthouse in Pikeville, KY, this Viquesney statue is in excellent condition and has the original barbed wire still in place. It features plaques on all four sides honoring those who gave their all in their country's service during WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam.

Attempts to learn the initial dedication date of this Doughboy haven’t been successful. The Smithsonian record states an installation year of 1920, but that's not possible, since the first Viquesney Doughboy wasn't completed and manufactured until 1921. Also, the copyright mark bears the name Spencer, Indiana rather than Americus, Georgia. Copyrights listing Spencer didn't appear until 1926 or 1927, after Viquesney reacquired the rights to his Doughboy company from his former business partner in Americus, Walter Rylander.

A search of files of old newspapers through 1929 by Pikeville Librarian, Christy Fleming, didn’t find an article that mentioned its dedication so its likely it was originally dedicated in the range of 1930-1933. The plaza where it is located did not exist then, at least in its current form, so it has been relocated at some date, even though it was probably always somewhere in Courthouse Square.
