Memorial

This cast aluminum memorial, dedicated in May 2019, honors the 190 men from Erie County, Pennsylvania, who made the ultimate sacrifice in World War I. Since installation, eleven additional men have been identified and their names will be placed on the plaque. Funds were raised by the Erie County World War One Centennial Committee and the Presque Isle Chapter, DAR.

This memorial contains three granite memorial walls to honor those who served from the Civil War to the present day, with plans to eventually include those who served in earlier wars. A section on one of the walls is dedicated to those who have died in service as well as three prisoners of war from World War II. The monument area also features a bronze statue of two soldiers and bricks inscribed with the names of veterans now living in Escalante and Boulder.

Eugene Bullard's story is so incredible that it reads like fiction. The son of a former slave, he ran away from his Columbus home as a child, fleeing the Jim Crow South in the early 20th century after his beloved father was nearly lynched. He stowed away on a boat for Europe, boxed professionally, drummed in a jazz band in Paris, rubbed elbows with Louis Armstrong and fought for the French Foreign Legion in World War I.

Awarded France's Croix de Guerre for his heroism at the Battle of Verdun, Bullard next joined France's air service, becoming the world's first African American fighter pilot and earning the nickname "The Black Swallow of Death." The segregated U.S. military wouldn't accept him as a pilot because of his race during WWI. He spied for the French Resistance and narrowly escaped the Nazi invasion of Paris, eventually returning to the U.S., settling in New York and living his remaining years largely in obscurity.

Georgia’s WWI Centennial Commission raised private donations for the monument, placing it just outside the Museum of Aviation, where Bullard is honored in the Aviation Hall of Fame. The statue depicts Bullard in his military uniform. His arms are crossed. And he is looking skyward.

In the early 1920s, this stone sculpture was erected as part of a fieldstone drinking fountain.  It depicts a WWI soldier standing at parade rest, with both hands on the barrel of his rifle.

This memorial is one of E. M. Viquesney's "Spirit of the American Doughboy" statues.  It was originally placed and dedicated at Sunset Park.  It was later lost in a flood and later recovered, vandalized, lost again, recovered, and restored.  After a chaotic history, it now can be found in the lounge of the Funkhouser American Legion Post No. 8.

In 1998, World War 2 Navy veteran Ken Koehnen approached
the City of Excelsior to build an Excelsior War Memorial. After
8 years of work with the help of American Legion Post #259
and the City Council, the Veterans Memorial Garden &
Monument were dedicated on August 12, 2008.

This memorial is a statue of a uniformed World War I soldier standing erect with his left hand on his hip and his right holding his hat. Behind the soldier stands a classical female figure wearing a robe, she is holding an American flag in her left hand. The sculpture was created by renowned sculptor Daniel Chester French. The statues stand on a granite base inscribed:

Villanova University's Special Collection has extensive collections dealing with the Great War, in particle popular aspects of the conflict such as war time fiction, pro-German newspapers, pamphlet literature, and Irish and Irish American materials. These are all available to the researching public.

As well, the University is hosting a number of exhibits and events. 

Rectangular granite monument topped with a large globe.  The WW1 side of the monolith contains 13 names.  “Dedicated to the Memory of Our Men of Fannin County Who Made the Supreme Sacrifice. Erected by the McCaysville Garden Club, 1946.” 

This memorial is located in City Park in downtown Blue Ridge. It was dedicated on October 21, 1937 to Fannin County soldiers who fought in the Great War. Later, additional sides of the obelisk were dedicated to the fallen from WWII, Korea, and Vietnam.
