Granite Monument.  Inscription – “Dedicated to the Men of Upson County Who Sacrificed their Lives in World War I.”  “Colored”- list 9 names, “White” - list of 7 names”. 

Also, a bronze plaque inside the courthouse lists the same sixteen names as the outside granite monument.    Inscription – “Erected by the John Houston Chapter – In Honor of the Men of Upson County Who Died in Service in the Great War for the Cause of World Liberty – 1920.”

The memorial garden is near the Veterans Cemetery offices.

Division activated November 1917, arrived France March 1918. Earned the proud sobriquet 'Rock of the Marine' by stopping the German advance on Paris at Chateau Thierry, June 1918.

USS Tampa Memorial Window

The USS Tampa was torpedoed by the Germans and sunk on September 26, 1918 in Bristol Channel, England. All 131 on board perished, including 24 from the Tampa area.

WWI Memorial Plaque and Flagpole dedicated to the Vacaville, CA citizens who gave their lives in WWI. Memorial is located in front of the Veterans Memorial Building, 510 Merchant Street, Vacaville, CA. There is a 1918 6 inch, Trench Mortar to the left of the memorial.

The plaque on the base of this doughboy statue dedicates it to the citizens of Camp Washington "who offered their lives in defense of humanity in the World War." In the late 80s, inscriptions were added around the base to honor each branch of the Armed Forces and service in World War II, the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam.

In 1900, John Wanamaker of Wanamaker Department Store in Philadelphia, came to Island Heights, NJ to open a camp, "the Barracks," for children attending the John Wanamaker Commercial Institutes in Philadelphia and New York. A paternal employer, Wanamaker was adamant about well-rounded education for his employees. "Thinking, trying, toiling and trusting God, is all of my biography," he wrote once in response to a request for a sketch of his life, and so in finding Island Heights religiously oriented, easily accessible by rail from both stores, and with the availability of land for camping and marching, he established his quasi-military encampment in the northeastern corner of the Borough.

The young employees came in weekly shifts until child labor was deemed unlawful in 1941. People came from miles around to watch the drilling and hear the Drum & Bugle Corps and the Military Band. The students were drilled like a National Guard camp, but with time for field sports and swimming.

In later years, full companies from Wanamaker's went on to fight in foreign wars, and a granite statue on the Borough grounds stands as a tribute to their participation at the Battle of Verdun in France.
