On the eve of World War I, President (and former Governor of New Jersey) Woodrow Wilson faced the difficult task of transforming the American people into a pro-war populace willing to make supreme sacrifices for the country. Replete with patriotic images and rhetoric, posters used the power of illustration art to raise money for the war effort and induce a changing American mindset towards war.

The Hoboken Historical Museum opens a new exhibit that focuses on how the city and its residents were transformed after the United States entered World War I. "World War I Centennial: Heaven, Hell or Hoboken," which runs through December 23, will feature silent films of soldiers at the Hoboken port. It will also show government posters meant to promote the local draft registration and urge people at home to buy war bonds, conserve resources and help with the war effort.
During that time, Hoboken became the main port for the U.S. Expeditionary Forces headed to Europe.

“Over Here: Newark Mobilizes for World War I” is an exhibit prepared by Dr. George Robb and will be at the Newark Public Library, 5 Washington Street. Dr. Robb is a widely published historian and Newark resident, and also a professor of history at William Paterson University.
This outstanding WWI exhibit, will contain historic photographs, sheet music, pamphlets, posters, and other materials from the Library’s and his personal collections. It’s well worth seeing! It will be available for viewing in the Main Library’s third floor gallery from April 6 throughout the rest of the year.

An Unintentional Consequence of WWI: American Religious Pluralism and Jewish Experience

The American government entered World War I confident in the knowledge that the United States was a predominantly Protestant country, albeit one which extended religious tolerance to other faiths. Kean, as well as their three Roosevelt cousins, George, John and Philip. The exhibit, using firsthand accounts from their letters and postcards sent home, as well as, photographs and personal objects, will allow visitors to walk in their footsteps as they were sent off to basic training in 1917 to fighting overseas ...

Readings-Based Discussions: The Home Front

Dr. Christopher C. Gibbs, author and U.S. army veteran, will facilitate a reading-based discussion on the American homefront during World War I. Readings should be done in preparation for the evening and are available at http://ww1america.org/home-front.php. Gibbs is the author of The Great Silent Majority: Missouri’s Resistance to World War I, as well as six crime novels set in the aftermath of the war. He served with the military police in Vietnam, and has taught history at Rutgers, Middlesex County College, and Union County College. Pre-registration is required for this event.

Film Screening: Flyboys
