1917: World War, Women's Rights, and Weaponry Sciences Exhibit

In recognition of the 100th anniversary of the United States’ entry into World War I, Morris County Historical Society offers a provocative exhibit highlighting The Great War’s impact on Morris County. The new exhibit 1917: World War, Women’s Rights, and Weaponry Sciences, displayed throughout Acorn Hall, will be available from Sunday, February 19 through Sunday, June 25, 2017. Stories of Morris County’s brave men and women during the WWI era will be complimented by authentic WWI uniforms, weaponry and militaria, period clothing, and ephemera.

Saber, Swords, Guns and Glory: Militaria in Morris County

Experience rarely seen weaponry from Morris County Historical Society’s extensive militaria collection in Sabers, Swords, Guns, and Glory: Militaria in Morris County, on display for a limited time at Acorn Hall, Sunday, May 28 through Sunday, July 30, 2017. The exhibit spans more than two centuries of American military history, and features a Revolutionary War saber, 1862 Springfield rifle, 19th century Kentucky Long rifle, Civil War munitions and accoutrements, military uniforms from the 20th century, and numerous medals and commendations earned by local soldiers and veterans. On Sunday, June 4th, at 2 p.m. Morristown and Morris Township Library (1 Miller Rd., Morristown, NJ 07960, 973-538-3473, http://www.jfpl.org) welcomes historian and preservation advocate, Erik L. Burro who will talk about New Jersey’s major World War I monuments.
Mr. Burro recently completed a photographic survey of all of New Jersey’s major WWI Memorials, a collection representing many of the most highly regarded sculptors of the post-War years. These public works range from doughboy soldiers to allegorical figures placed in a variety of settings, all dedicated to local veterans of America’s Forgotten War. “Over Here: Newark Mobilizes for World War I” is an exhibit prepared by Dr. George Robb and will be at the Newark Public Library, 5 Washington Street. Dr. Robb is a widely published historian and Newark resident, and also a professor of history at William Paterson University.
This outstanding WWI exhibit, will contain historic photographs, sheet music, pamphlets, posters, and other materials from the Library’s and his personal collections. It’s well worth seeing! It will be available for viewing in the Main Library’s third floor gallery from April 6 throughout the rest of the year.

Chatham Historical Society Centennial Commemoration of the Great War

In France during the Great War, five Chatham Borough men lost their lives. Their sacrifice was originally honored by the planting of five red oak trees in 1919 on the grounds of Public School #1, now the Municipal Building. Sadly none remain.
In conjunction with the 100th anniversary of the United States entry into WW1, the Chatham Historical Society will dedicate another red oak tree in memory of the soldiers whose lives it commemorates and in gratitude for their ultimate sacrifice.
