Jackson World War I Memorial Fountain

The Jackson World War I Memorial Fountain was donated to Madison County shortly after the end of WWI by members of the Jackson-McClaran chapter of the American Red Cross. Following a restoration in 2018, the memorial was re-dedicated to mark the centennial of the 1918 Armistice that ended World War I. The restoration included repainting the structure, restoring the missing urn on the top, and installing three new plaques: one recognizing African-American citizens of Madison County who were not honored in the past, one listing the previously omitted names of the dead not mentioned on the original plaque including African-American soldiers, and the official plaque designating the fountain as a Centennial Memorial Monument.

Jacob Cousins Memorial

This memorial honors Corporal Jacob Cousins who was the first soldier of Jewish faith from Portland to be killed in World War I. Over 2,000 people attended the first Memorial dedication on September 22, 1935. This memorial honors one man who died in the line of duty, but also serves as a reminder of the patriotism and sacrifices that Jewish Americans have made for their country. A second plaque on the memorial remembers Portland Jewish soldiers killed in World War II. Jacob Cousins grew up in Portland. He was 24 years old when he enlisted in the Army. His Company C. 328th Infantry fought in the 47-day battle in the Meuse-Argonne region of France. On October 14, 1918, less than a month before the World War I ended, Cousins was killed leading his platoon in battle on the German border. Cousins received the Purple Heart and Silver Medal for his bravery posthumously. He is buried at Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery, the largest military cemetery in Europe with over 14,000 graves.

This bronze statue of Jane A Delano was sculpted by R. Tait McKenzie (1867-1938) and dedicated in 1933 to honor Jane A Delano (1862-1919) and the 296 nurses who died in World War I. It is located at the American Red Cross facilities in Washington, D.C. Delano was the founder of the Red Cross nursing programs and died in a barracks hospital in Brittany, France, in 1919 while on an inspection tour following the armistice. Delano is buried in Section 21 of Arlington National Cemetery, a section known as the "Nurses Section". At the top of the hill in Section 21 is another memorial to Delano and her nurses.

This Spirit of the American Doughboy statue, by E.M Viquesney, sits on a granite shaft and commemorates local citizens who served in World War I.

A stone obelisk was designed by Stella M. Cordova and erected here in about 1979, and a 50-year time capsule was buried at its base in 1986. On the obelisk is engraved the word "DEBER," and on the base are the names of men who fought in WWI and WWII, and their parents. Nearby is a flagpole and an airplane set on top of a pole.
