The Tallis Scholars: War and Peace

England's world-reknown early music choir commemorates the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. The music of Josquin, Guerrero, Pärt, Mouton, Lobo, Victoria, Tavener, and Palistrina loosely follows the form of the Mass, honoring all who passed in the conflict. A special veterans' commemoration will take place just before the program.
Tickets are $30 general admission, or $100, which includes premiere seating and invitation to a reception after the concert.

The city of Evart will be holding a commemoration ceremony in honor of Joseph Guyton (First American killed on German soil in WWI) on Memorial Day May 28th.
The ceremony will begin at 10:00 AM at Guyton Park in Evart. Representative Jason Wentworth will deliver a commemoration speech followed by a parade down Main Street to the Guyton Memorial Bridge on US 10, where a wreath will be tossed into the Muskegon River. This force became known as the American North Russia Expeditionary Force.

World War I called for broad public participation through multiple avenues: joining the military, buying liberty bonds or war stamps, conserving food, taking up a public job. Everyone was expected to do their part and the impact of the war was felt throughout all aspects of society. The propaganda posters of the war reflect this mass mobilization effort. A closer look at the posters reveals patterns of representations of men, women, and children that tie into changing norms of social propriety.

Clemens is the audiovisual archivist at the Walter Reuther Library, Archives of Labor and Union Affairs at Wayne State University. As part of an international commemoration, MSU’s Beaumont Tower will join other carillons around the world in performing music commissioned to honor the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day. The work, titled “A Sacred Suite,” a triptych on Gregorian themes by the renowned Flemish carillonneur and composer Geert D'hollander, will be performed by MSU Assistant Carillonneur Laurie Harkema.
