Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) and the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) have teamed together to create a joint exhibit on the First World War that will open on April 6, 2017, the 100th anniversary of the U.S. entry into the Great War. The exhibit will focus on the American experience in the war, and how ANC and ABMC were focal points for remembrance and commemoration of the Great War after the conflict ended. ANC averages approximately 3-4 million visitors a year, so this exhibit will be one of the most visited World War One displays in the U.S. ANC Historian Christopher Warren provides more information about the upcoming exhibit here.

Mr. Terry Hamby of Kentucky was sworn in as a Commissioner of the U.S. World War One Centennial Commission in Washington, DC last week. Appointed by Senate Majority Leader, Senator Mitch McConnell, Hamby is a veteran of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army, and and is the founder and CEO of BMAR & Associates, which provides services to the Department of Defense. When the when the U.S. entered World War One in 1917, there was a shortage of workers for all types of jobs related to the war effort, including physicians. The need for the nation to mobilize for the war effort seemed an opportunity for women doctors to go “over there” to serve on the front lines, but there was opposition. So women physicians took matters into their own hands, forming voluntary organizations and traveling independently to war-torn areas of France to provide sorely needed medical care.
