Devi Singh
Devi Singh was born on February 1, 1890 in Kharodi, British India. Devi Singh immigrated to the United States before 1917. By 1917 at the age of 26, Devi was living in Brentwood, Los Angeles, California, working as gardener at the Briarwood Park. On June 5th, 1917 he was drafted into the United States Military. He was also featured in the August 1918 issue of the newspaper and journal Young India with other Asians Indians serving in the U.S military.
Devi Singh’s draft card also lists his race as Caucasian. On December 11, 1917 Private Devi and his unit Company G 162 Infantry of the 41st Division departed from New York City, New York to most likely to France on the anchor line S.S Tuscania. On April 19, 1919 Private First Class Singh and his unit departed from Liverpool, England on the ship Louisville and arrived at Hoboken, New Jersey for Camp Merritt on April 30, 1919.
