Wartime Recipes: Cocktails During the Great War.                        

Most armies issued alcohol to their soldiers as a daily ration. This was used to fortify the soldiers to the horrors of war. While on leave,the use of alcohol was continued and encouraged by mixing alcohol with a citrus and a flavoring. This was the modern cocktail.
